Job Summary

A position is available in the Supply Operations Department for an Operator (Supply, Pumping, and Storage). This position works under general supervisory direction in the operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and calibration of a variety of equipment and facilities that supply, treat, pump, store, and distribute drinking water. Application of knowledge and abilities in water treatment and distribution processes, PLC-based control systems, and mechanical concepts is imperative to ensure a high-quality product while establishing and maintaining economic efficiencies. Applicant must have a high school diploma, Connecticut driver’s license. Must have a minimum of two (2) years in the operation and maintenance of supply, pumping, and treatment facilities. Applicant must be able to diagnose mechanical problems and make the necessary repairs/corrects without being directed.

Principal Responsibilities

 The requirements of the position include:

  • Maintain, operate, and adjust treatment plant pumps, motors, chemical feed systems and other equipment under direction of senior operating staff  to assure optimum system performance.
  • Conduct facility rounds including monitoring of chemical usage and supply, and assessment of equipment for proper operation; collect water samples and perform chemical and physical laboratory testing and report any quality or process control issues.
  • Monitor and operate treatment plant and distribution facilities PLC-based control and data acquisition system.
  • Operate electrical and electronic equipment such as controllers, automatic monitors, recorders, and standby power systems.
  • Maintain, operate, and adjust gatehouse valves, screens, grates, reservoirs and related appurtenance.
  • Compile, maintain, and update accurate maintenance documentation, plant log and various quality reports.
  • Perform general plant maintenance and housekeeping.
  • Operate a diverse assortment of mechanical and electrical tools, including test and calibration equipment, pneumatic tools, cutting, hand, and power tools.
  • Performs all activities in compliance with company and regulator mandated procedures, rules, regulations, and guidelines.
  • Must be able to participate on a standby roster, and to work rotating, evening, and weekend shifts, including holidays.
  • Possess ability to lift 50 pounds as well as maneuver larger items.
  • Must be able to work independently and spend long periods of time driving alone.
  • Perform other various duties as assigned.

Preferred Requirements

  • Candidates should have two (2) years’ experience in the operation and maintenance of supply, pumping, and treatment facilities or comparable experience.
  • Applicant must understand the fundamental and applied knowledge of water treatment processes including coagulation, clarification, filtration, oxidation, and disinfection and the ability to operate our dewatering centrifuge and water treatment plants.
  • A CT Class II water treatment plant operator certification is desired for this position. 

Education/Certifications

  • Candidates must have a minimum possess a high school diploma.
  • Requires CT Motor Vehicle License. A good driving record (DMV check required). 
  • Candidate must be able to obtain a DOT Medical Card prior to start date.
  • License & Certifications: Shall obtain a CT Class I Water Treatment Operator Certification within 24 monthsthen shall obtain a CT Class II Water Treatment Operator Certification within 36 months; then shall obtain a CT Class IV Water Treatment Operator Certification within 60 months (if applicable).  Each license will result in a pay upgrade and eventual eligibility for a standby rotation.

Salary

  • Job is classified as an hourly grade 8, with a rate range that has a training wage of $41.05 per hour.
  • Successful candidate will move through Steps 1 through 8 of the pay range at 6-month intervals with satisfactory performance to the maximum salary. Step 1 of the range is $41.98 per hour
  • If the chosen candidate already holds a treatment license, position is posted as a grade 9 with a training wage of $42.52 per hour. 
  • Chosen candidate must be able to work Monday through Friday from 7:00AM to 3:30PM
  • Must be available to work overtime and will be required to work in the stand-by rotation.
