Senior Operator - Stamford

This position works under supervisory direction in the operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and calibration of a variety of equipment and facilities that supply, treat, pump, store, and distribute water. Application of knowledge in water treatment process, PLC based control systems, and mechanical concepts is imperative to ensure a high quality product while maintaining economic efficiencies.


•    Operate Stamford WTP centrifuge sludge dewatering system.

•    Manage sludge residuals process at the Stamford WTP including dump truck and payloader operation on site. 

•    Maintain, operate, and adjust treatment plant pumps, motors, chemical feed systems and other equipment under general direction of Chief Operator to assure optimum plant performance. 

•    Conduct facility rounds including monitoring of chemical usage and supply, and assessment of equipment for proper operation.

•    Collect water samples and perform chemical and physical laboratory testing such as turbidity, pH, and UV254; review and interpret information and data with Chief Operator to ensure water quality and resolve process control issues.

•    Monitor and operate treatment plant and distribution facilities PLC-based control and data acquisition system.

•    Operate and troubleshoot electrical and electronic equipment such as controllers, automatic monitors, recorders, and standby power systems. 

•    Maintain, operate, and adjust gatehouse valves, screens, grates, reservoirs and related appurtenance.

•    Plan and coordinate maintenance activities on all equipment associated with facility. 

•    Compile, maintain, update, and validate maintenance documentation, plant log and various quality reports.

•    Perform general plant maintenance and housekeeping.

•    Operate a diverse assortment of mechanical and electrical tools, including test and calibration equipment, pneumatic tools, cutting, hand, and power tools.

•    Insures all activities are in compliance with company and regulator mandated procedures, rules, regulations, and guidelines. 

•    Must be able to participate in weekend rotation coverage at Stamford plant as well as participate in holiday and vacation coverages.

•    Possess ability to lift 50 pounds.

•    Perform other various duties as assigned.

KNOW  HOW (Education, Experience, Certification required, etc.)

•    Minimum of four (4) years in the operation and maintenance of supply, pumping, and treatment facilities. 

•    Possess or acquire Connecticut Class IV Treatment Operator certification within 4 years of hire.  

•    Possess or acquire Ct CDL for dump truck operation within 2 years of hire.

•    Fundamental and applied knowledge of water treatment processes including coagulation, clarification, filtration, oxidation, and disinfection.

•    Must possess a working knowledge and understanding of mechanical and/or electrical systems. 

•    High School diploma and appropriate technical training is required. 

•    Experience with the operation of personal computers.

•    Valid Connecticut driver’s license is required.

Accountable to the Senior Chief Operator at the facility assigned or Manager Treatment for the completion and accuracy of assigned tasks.


The position is classified as a Grade 9 with a rate range that has a minimum of $37.78 and a maximum of $45.48 per hour.  The successful candidate will move through Step 1 through 8 of the range at 6-month intervals with satisfactory performance to the maximum salary.
